Since the creation of prosthetics, amputees have been able to replace a lost limb with an inanimate limb; however with recent medical advancements surgeons have been able to create controllable prosthetics. When a limb is amputated, the procedure removes the bone and muscle but leaves the nerve endings intact which scientists have since began to synapse with the new prosthesis allowing it to have motion. With the current progression in prosthetics the outcome for amputation patients is looking to be a more "normal" one than ever. Here is the article.
For science to allow those individuals who once were unable to use limbs to move them once more is truly astounding. This is a fascinating piece of work in my mind as I study physical therapy because I think it would be very interesting to work with someone using a new age prosthesis. Medicine is constantly improving the lives of people around the world and constantly evolving making it a dynamic field of study that will forever be in demand.
