FDA Approves First Drug to Prevent Preterm Births

17-HP Ever heard of it? Are any of you reading this mommy's or on the verge of being moms? If so great, this will pertain to you and if not, it's still an interesting article. The United States has a very high mortality for infants than any other country and this is because of premature births. For those of you who don't know what that is, it means that a female is delivering a baby before 37 weeks of her pregnancy. The rate for this is going up and researchers can not figure out why. It was finally okayed by the FDA which was a great relief because experts say that it could really put a dent in the preemie problem. This dent that their hoping for will not be a huge dent but any dent is better than none. The March of Dimes calculated that if all the women who were eligible to get this new drug did, there would be 10,000 fewer premature babies born each year. As any drug that is coming out, there are risks for taking 17-HP. They say that it is not for women who have had prior premature births of twins or multiple births, or who are carrying more than one fetus. Also, women should not take this if they have high blood pressure or any infections.
When they release this drug, it will be called Makena. The study that they did showed that 37 percent of women who got weekly injections still delivered prematurely compared to 55 percent of the women who got injections of a placebo. What their saying... Its not magic. It wont guarantee that you will not deliver prematurely but has shown to decrease the chances which is better than nothing.

Would you try this drug if you were pregnant and possibly at risk for delivering a premature baby? Do you think that this is right to do or do you think that nature should just take place and let the baby be born prematurely?
