The Oregon Humane Society is a non-profit organization located in Portland, Oregon. They help rescue abused and neglected animals and have a 100% adoption rate. One very interesting thing about this organization is that they have Humane Investigators that are commissioned by Oregon’s Governor to investigate animal cruelty throughout the state. Last year they investigated over 1,000 complaints and seized 245 animals whose lives were in danger.
This article is about a Clackamas man who inflicted multiple injuries on a young pit bull puppy and was sentenced to 15 days in jail and a monetary fine. The medical examiner at the Oregon Human Society revealed in court on December 20, 2010 that the puppy had multiple fractures of his ribs, fractures to his skull and both eye sockets, and a broken right front leg.
I thought that this article was interesting and that it’s wonderful that these investigators are helping the abused and neglected animals. I have always loved animals and never understood why anyone would abuse them. This article was brought to my attention because it was one of the few that a person actually received jail time. My question is, if a convicted animal abuser can receive up to 1 year in jail, why does this person only receive 15 days after brutally beating his animal? How much more battered does the animal have to be for a person to receive more jail time?

This story is a very sad reality of society, why and how people can do these things to animals is beyond me. I have seen animal abuse occur and it is something that makes me sick. If someone were to abuse their child they would go to jail for a long time, and I feel that the same action should be taken with animal abuse as well. This is because animals are just as helpless as children and they do not deserve to be treated like that.
ReplyDeleteI am actually doing my Newsletter Proposal of the Heartland Humane Society. It is so sad to hear about the poor homeless animals that are being left behind and the owners not caring about them. Animal abuse is not right and people that treat those animals that way should be severely punished. Thank goodness for all the nonprofit organizations that can help these animals because without them they would be hopeless.
